Northwestern’s Other Championship ContendersNorthwestern’s women’s lacrosse team was not the only national championship contender for the Wildcats. Cristelle Grier and partner Audra Cohen made a run at the women’s tennis NCAA doubles title, but the tandem lost in the semifinal round to Stanford University’s Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey. Cohen and Grier, a Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences senior from London, finished the season 37-7. (See “Sense of Titlement”) Cohen, then a freshman, also came within two points of winning the women’s tennis NCAA Singles Championship. She lost to Baylor University freshman Zuzana Zemenova, who came back in the third set to defeat Cohen 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. (Cohen transferred to the University of Miami after the season.) Northwestern’s softball team made a run at the Women’s College World Series, but lost a two-game series to DePaul University in the NCAA Super Regional in late May. The Wildcats closed the season with a 42-18 record, the second-best win total in Northwestern softball history. — S.H. |
