The Center's many modern instruments of surface science and catalysis and its access to the analytical facilities of the chemistry department and other University departments enable its members to carry out their ambitious research programs. The equipment and facilities are open to its industrial affiliates for research and development.
Surface analytical instrument manufactured by VG Instruments provides capabilities for X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) in two independent, ultrahigh vacuum analytical chambers on either end of an ultrahigh vacuum sample preparation vessel.
High resolution electron microscope permits the visual observation of individual atoms in supported metal particles.
Analytical electron microscope provides elementary analysis of very small spots on the surface of catalysts.
Three scanning tunneling microscopes determine surface roughness at the nanometer scale. They are based on rigid, single-tube piezoelectric scanners, vibration-resistant and capable of atomic resolution using graphite as a standard benchmark.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer dedicated to the study of chemisorbed molecules and kinetics of their reaction is in use continuously.
Extended X-ray absorption, fine structure (EXAFS) measurements are used to identify the atomic environment in noncrystalline catalysts and complexes.
Laser Raman techniques, including surface-enhanced Raman, are used on single crystals, supported oxide catalysts, and metal electrodes.
