Academic Mentoring Program
This fall, the University Academic Advising Center (UAAC), in conjunction with the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence, launched a pilot initiative called the Academic Mentoring Program (AMP).
AMP provides academic support for undergraduates enrolled in ECON 201 – Intro to Macroeconomics. Mentors – fellow undergraduates who have taken and done well in the course – meet weekly with a group of students to discuss and work through questions and problems the students have about their coursework. Mentors participate in training and regular staff meetings with AMP staff, communicate regularly with course faculty, and provide feedback to staff regarding students’ attendance and the groups’ general progress.
Each AMP group consists of 5–7 students who are enrolled in the same section of ECON 201 and share a common professor, as well as one of our trained Academic Mentors. The groups meet at a set time and location each week for one hour. Students are expected to attend all sessions and prepare for each session in advance. Preparation includes attending lecture and discussion sections, completing required readings, attempting assigned homework problems, and formulating questions to ask during the session.
