Mr. Phillips taught "The Art of Poetry: Makers and Making"

Carl Phillips is the author of three collections of poetry, From the Devotions (Graywolf 1998), named a finalist for the National Book Award; Cortege (Graywolf 1995), named a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; and In the Blood (Northeastern University Press 1992), winner of the Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize. A new collection, Pastoral, is forthcoming from Graywolf in January 2000. He has also published a translation of Sophocles' Philoctetes.

Among Phillips' awards are a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and a Witter Bynner Fellowship. He directs the Creative Writing Program at Washington University, St. Louis and teaches in the African-American Studies Program there as well.
