The Consortium for Advanced Studies Abroad (CASA) in Cuba offers students a unique opportunity to have direct access to Cuba’s leading institution of higher learning, the University of Havana, and to Casa de Las Américas, the Cuban government’s premier research institution on Caribbean and Latin American studies, Cuban culture, and the arts.. This program is designed for students with an interest in the social sciences and humanities with advanced Spanish skills.

Important Note: This program operates under special permission and in compliance with Northwestern University’s Undergraduate International Travel Policy. Prior to departure, participants are required to complete the Undergraduate Release for Travel to Countries under a U.S. DOS Level 3 or 4 Travel Advisory.

Important Note

This is a new offering for 2018; there are no students enrolled in this program at this time. As the U.S. Department of State issued a Travel Warning for Cuba on 9/29/2017, Northwestern University will undertake a review of the program as required by the Undergraduate International Travel Policy by the end of winter quarter.

  1. Complete a Northwestern Study Abroad Application by February 10
  2. Interview with Francesca Miroballi at Undergraduate Learning Abroad, by February 10 

Enrollment requirements:

Students participating in the CASA Program must enroll in up to 4 courses, including:

Course restrictions:

  • Students may only enroll in courses in two divisions of the University of Havana: the Social Sciences Division (Facultad de Filosofia y Historia) and the Division of Humanities (Facultad de Artes y Letras), which offer a variety of courses in history, philosophy, political and economic theory, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, art history, musicology, sociolinguistics, and literature with concentrations in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Cuba
  • In certain circumstances, arrangements may also be made for students to access courses in other divisions. Such requests are not possible to guarantee and depend on the approval of the University administration. 

Languages: Spanish

Language Requirements: 

  • Completion of at least two language, literature, or culture courses (200-level+) at Northwestern
  • Or a score of 5 on the Advanced Placement exam in Spanish language and completion of at least one 200-level course at Northwestern


Students have two accommodations options:

  1. Living in a residence provided by Casa de las Américas with other CASA-Cuba students
  2. Living with Cuban families in homestay setting

All residences are safe, clean, and secure, located in the Vedado district, within walking distance to Casa de las Américas and the University of Havana. Students will share ample bedrooms (typically double occupancy) with modern toilets and showers, and will be provided with breakfast and dinner each day.
