Student Affairs Marketing (SAM) tells the story of the Division of Student Affairs and its multiple departments to the Northwestern community through the creation, implementation, and assessment of effective integrated marketing communications. SAM is comprised of the following areas: Graphic Design, Communications, and Visual Communications (Photography, Video).

Graduate Assistants

Graduate Assistant – Communications Coordinator

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Communications Coordinator Graduate Assistant reports to the Director of Student Affairs Marketing (SAM) and works closely with various members of the SAM team and professional staff/clients from around the Division of Student Affairs. Members of SAM participate in various meetings, workshops, critiques, and brainstorming sessions as necessary.

This position will be responsible for collecting stories and content from partners within the division, editing a weekly newsletter, managing the newsletter content calendar and other writing and editing as necessary.

*Ideal candidates will be available from Fall 2020 through Spring 2021.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Writes content for the Student Affairs blog, edits content submitted for the blog and a weekly newsletter to Student Affairs staff. Ensures all information is accurate and complete. Contributes additional strategies, ideas, and mediums to each project as necessary.
  • Manages content submitted through Student Affairs website, solicits content and story ideas from partners across the division.
  • Maintains content calendar for weekly newsletter, must be able to meet deadlines and help partners meet deadlines.
  • Must be an independent, self-starter with exceptional written communication skills.
  • An excellent copy editor with a passion for writing and grammar.
  • Leads and actively participates in a collaborative atmosphere; offering encouragement and constructive criticism to colleagues.

Communications Team

Copywriter

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Copywriter reports to the Director and works closely with various members of the SAM team and professional staff/clients from around the Division of Student Affairs. Members of SAM participate in various meetings, workshops, critiques, and brainstorming sessions as necessary.

Each member of SAM is expected to determine creative and effective marketing solutions by thinking big, taking risks, and collaborating to develop strategies that build awareness, engagement, and action from target audiences.

Work-study is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Works closely with graphic designers to produce creative copy solutions (intentionally overlap schedules with designers)
  • Researches, interviews, writes, edits, and publishes articles, blurbs, and press releases for the Student Affairs Blog and other mediums.
  • Copyedits long-form publications, campaigns, and other communications.
  • Edits and moves copy to Communication Spreadsheets
  • Develops creative solutions/writes copy for advertising campaigns.
  • Ensures constant flow of new and timely blog posts on the Student Affairs Blog.

The Strategist/Copywriter works closely with the Director of Student Affairs Marketing, other full-time staff, and Communications Supervisors to ensure a consistent brand is upheld for the departments within the Division of Student Affairs.

Social Media Coordinator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Strategizes, monitors, and posts on social media accounts to engage with the Northwestern community regarding the services, promotions, events, and other offerings.
  • Maintain the accounts on, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, and other relevant social media platforms
  • Implements marketing strategies via other digital platforms that connect with integrated marketing communications on social channels and others.
  • Researches and analyzes social media trends to determine which platforms and methods will best reach target markets.
  • Works collaboratively with team members to determine best strategies to implement.

Communications Coordinator (Residential Services)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Residential Services Graphic Designer, the Residential Services Communications Coordinator develops effective communications solutions to effectively market and communicate Residential Services to the Northwestern Community through various marketing campaigns, social media platforms, blogs, press releases, and other mediums.

The Residential Services Communications Coordinator works closely with the Residential Services Graphic Designer, other student copywriters and graphic designers, and marketing project requestors to tell the Residential Services story to the Northwestern Community through the use of effective voice, tone, headlines, and copy across various mediums.

Work-study is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Working collaboratively with members of the Student Affairs Marketing team and colleagues in Residential Services to produce efficient and creative marketing solutions.
  • Writing and copyediting website text to effectively communicate information on the Residential Services website.
  • Creating timely and effective communications through a number of different social media channels to promote Residential Services’ events, services, and updates to the NU community.
  • Working with colleagues in the Residential Services department to collect, proof, and submit articles and stories to various media outlets which include, but are not limited to, Wildcat Family Focus, Student Affairs Monthly, Student Affairs Quarterly, and Northwestern News.
  • Covering Residential Services events and creating articles and blog posts for the Student Affairs Blog. Commonly covered events will include evening and weekend programs held in residence halls, residential colleges, and residential communities
  • Assisting the other members of Student Affairs Marketing with copywriting, strategy, and engagement as needed.
  • Assess the effectiveness of communications by assessing, analyzing, and reporting data based on social media, listserv, website, event stats, and more.

The Residential Services Communications Coordinator works closely with the Graphic Designer for Residential Services, other full-time staff, and Communications Supervisors to ensure a consistent brand is upheld for the departments within the Division of Student Affairs and Residential Services.

Graphic Design Team

Graphic Designer

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Graphic Designer reports to the Assistant Director and works closely with various members of the SAM team and professional staff/clients from around the Division of Student Affairs. Members of SAM participate in various meetings, workshops, critiques, and brainstorming sessions as necessary.

Each member of SAM is expected to determine creative and effective marketing solutions by thinking big, taking risks, and collaborating to develop strategies that build awareness, engagement, and action from target audiences.

Work-study is required.

The Graphic Designer creates effective campaigns by way of print and digital designs using various Adobe graphic design programs.

Visual Communications Team

Photographer/Videographer

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Photographer/Videographer reports to the Visual Communications Manager and works closely with various members of the SAM team and professional staff/clients from around the Division of Student Affairs. Members of SAM participate in various meetings, workshops, critiques, and brainstorming sessions as necessary.

Each member of SAM is expected to determine creative and effective marketing solutions by thinking big, taking risks, and collaborating to develop strategies that build awareness, engagement, and action from target audiences.

Work-study is required.

The SAM Photographer/Videographer is someone with a creative eye and a flexible schedule who is willing to work some evenings and weekends. They will cover everything from major University events, department functions, marketing campaigns, as well as portraits of staff and students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Photo/Video of coverage events and programs for documentation purposes.
  • Photo/Video of people, places, and scenes for advertising campaigns.
  • Photographs headshots, campus, and other scenes as necessary.
  • Creates smaller videos for social media and other digital outlets.
  • Edits and shares photo collections & video projects with clients, team members, and the public in a timely manner.
  • Maintains structure of Photo/Video Libraries to optimize search capabilities.
  • Collaborates with designers and other staff for brainstorms if needed.
  • Films events and programs for documentation purposes.
  • Plans, films, and edits videos to advertise various promotions and initiatives. Works with clients to storyboard ideas, sets up shoots, films scenes, edits, and communicates with the client and your team throughout the process to ensure goals are met with the video project.
MINIMUM SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current Northwestern University Undergraduate student
  • Basic understanding of DSLR cameras, audio and lighting equipment
  • Experience editing photos with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom

Web Coordinator

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Website Coordinator reports to and collaborates with the Visual Communications Manager, ensuring the content migration and maintenance of the current and impending redesigned Student Affairs websites. This position also works with various members of the Student Affairs Marketing (SAM) team, such as photographers, graphic designers, and copywriters as well as professional staff/clients from around the Division of Student Affairs. Members of SAM participate in various meetings, workshops, critiques, and brainstorming sessions as necessary. This position is also involved in marketing on the websites for the division.

Each member of SAM is expected to determine creative and effective marketing solutions by thinking big, taking risks, and collaborating to develop strategies that build awareness, engagement, and action from target audiences.
*Students must be available September 2018 through June 2019.

Essential Functions
  • Work with the Visual Communications Manager to migrate web content for all division’s departments.
  • Utilize the website resource Siteimprove to find and correct broken links and misspellings, as well as checking on accessibility standards.
  • Work with SAM colleagues to implement campaigns on the appropriate websites.
  • Assist training division marketing partners on Cascade content management system.
Minimum Skills and Qualifications
  • Current Northwestern University student
  • Basic understanding of Content Management Systems and HTML code
  • Background in Cascade is ideal but not necessary
