If you are a degree-seeking student at Northwestern University*, and you are registered for classes, then NU defaults you into the NU Student Health Insurance Plan (NU-SHIP) -- at the start of each academic year -- to ensure you have comprehensive, affordable insurance coverage. (If you already are covered under your own health insurance plan, you must waive your NU-SHIP enrollment during the open enrollment period, to ensure you are not billed for the NU-SHIP.)

NU-SHIP coverage is not available for:

  • students in certificate programs
  • *degree-seeking students enrolled in programs through the School of Professional Studies (SPS)

If you are uncertain about your eligibility for the NU-SHIP, check with the Student Health Insurance office, student.insurance@northwestern.edu or 847.491.3621.

For an additional cost, you can add coverage for a spouse or same-sex partner, and for any unmarried children 26 years of age or younger. You must enroll your dependents before the enrollment / waiver deadline. Click here for more information on enrolling dependents (link).
