Title of Presentation: A Wireless Computing Lab Prototype Project

Format: Paper Presentation

Suggested Audience: User Services Staff, computer lab managers, library technologists, etc.

Presentation Outcome:

1. Understand the model used in our prototype project

Presentation Content:

This prototype involved the use of wireless local area networking technology and portable personal computers. The setting was the main Pitt library. The computers were loaned by library staff to patrons for use within the confines of the building. Patrons used the devices to do a variety of tasks related to instruction and research: document preparation, electronic mail, file transfer, printing, internet access, etc. From this prototype, we gained an understanding of many of the technological and the procedural requirements of operating a "wireless computing lab." Special emphasis was placed on employing hardware, software, and procedural techniques to maintain the integrity of the computers and to ensure that they were not stolen. To promote the success of the prototype project, we developed documentation for users and operators (library staff) of the system. Advertising was employed to make the program known to the student body. Throughout the prototype, we evaluated the usefulness of each component, changing procedures as needed. The outcome of the project was a report recommending that the program be expanded for use in many of the University's departmenatal libraries.
