Searle Graduate Associates build a robust community of educators on campus, leading graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in programs to hone, evaluate, and professionalize their teaching.
Working closely with a team led by the director of Graduate and Postdoctoral Learning at the Searle Center for Advancing Teaching & Learning, the Graduate Associates play a leadership role in the campus community by facilitating seminars, mentorship programs, and workshops on teaching and learning at Northwestern.Both Graduate Associates collaborate with the Searle Center team to:
- Design and lead TCP seminars
- Interview and recruit participants for Graduate and Postdoctoral Learning programs
- Facilitate Searle Workshops based on disciplinary need
- Evaluate Searle Grad & Postdoctoral Learning programs
There are two positions available:
Graduate Associate for the Teaching Certificate Program
The TCP GA primarily facilitates the Teaching Certificate Program. Primary responsibilities include developing and implementing program seminars and assignments, scheduling seminars, tracking participant progress, managing the TCP Canvas site, mentoring the Graduate Teaching Mentors (6-7 graduate students from an array of disciplines who provide feedback to program participants), providing feedback on GTM teaching observations, and contributing to program evaluation. This position also provides support for the Searle Center's workshop series, the New TA Conference, and Graduate Teaching Fellows programming.
Graduate Associate for the Graduate Teaching Fellows
The GTF GA primarily oversees the Graduate Teaching Fellows program. Primary responsibilities include mentoring 8-9 GTFs, managing the GTF Canvas site, coordinating the Searle Graduate Workshop Series, overseeing the GTF projects, providing feedback on GTF teaching observations, setting the agenda for and facilitating monthly GTF meetings, and contributing to program evaluation. This position also provides support for the New TA Conference, and Teaching Certificate Program by developing and leading seminars.
Qualifications
Ideal qualifications for both positions include:
- Ability to work collaboratively to develop innovative pedagogical programming
- Initiative to seek out resources and evidence to support program development
- Creativity and innovation in curriculum development
- Ability to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations and serve the needs of graduate students and postdocs across disciplines
- Knowledge of pedagogical literature and practices
- Experience in Searle programs
- Experience teaching at Northwestern or other institutions of higher education
- Familiarity with Canvas, MS Office, other software tools
The position carries a full stipend from The Graduate School with a 15-20 hour per week commitment. Searle Graduate Associates are expected to be able to commit for two years, be advanced to candidacy, and be in residence at Northwestern.
