About the Grants

In conjunction with the new Northwestern Guide to Inclusive Learning Environments, the Office of the Provost will provide up to fifty $1,000 grants to faculty who incorporate the Guide’s principles to redesign or modify a course for Winter and/or Spring 2021.

Application Process:

CRITERIA: Faculty should propose how they plan to use one or more strategies included in the Guide to Inclusive Learning Environments or other innovative strategies to implement the principles for inclusive teaching in their classroom. In addition, specific strategies for online implementation can be found on the Keep Teaching website. Applications will evaluated on: 1) your specific plan for implementing aspects of the Guide into your teaching for Winter or Spring Quarter classes; 2) a description of the intended impact of your work on enhancing the inclusive learning environment, such as on student participation and/or learning in your course(s); and 3) your plan for assessing the impact of your work.

ELIGIBILITY: Faculty of all ranks and lines, departments, or programs, who are teaching courses in Winter and/or Spring 2021 are eligible to apply. This includes department chairs and program or center directors, but excludes any faculty with a decanal appointment. Postdocs and graduate students are also excluded.

Faculty who have had a project funded through a past Linzer grant may apply for funding for this grant. However, the selection committee may prioritize first-time applicants.

FUNDING: The Linzer Grant for Innovation and Equity in Diversity and Equity – Inclusive Learning Environments will provide a one-time grant of $1,000 to be paid into a discretionary account. Grant funds may be used to support any aspect of a faculty member’s work to incorporate inclusive principles or strategies into their teaching. Examples of ways such funds could be used include:

  • Hiring a work study student or assistant to help revise the course materials
  • Hiring a zoom assistant to help facilitate Zoom connections during class sessions
  • Providing honoraria for guest lecturers.

APPLICATION MATERIALS: All applications should be submitted using the online form.

Application Deadline:

November 29, 2020

Selection Process:

Applications will be evaluated by the Provost’s Office.
