2020 Grant Recipients
Tabitha Bonilla, Assistant Professor, Human Development and Social Policy, School of Education and Social Policy – for Intersectionality, Measurement, and PublicPolicy,to develop an innovative undergraduate course focused on the theory of intersectionality and its incorporation into the broader research and practical understanding of identity. The course will include a laboratory component challenging students to learn how to incorporate better measurements of identity into research.
Inger Burnett-Zeigler, Associate Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine; Angel Miles, Healthcare/Home and Community Based Services Policy Analyst, Access Living; Jen Brown, Lecturer, Preventive Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine; and Rebecca Johnson, Research Assistant Professor, Medical Social Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine – for Equity for the Research Enterprise: Building Capacity for Researchers & Community Research Partnerships on Racial Equity in Research Engagement, to expand the Racial Equity in Research Engagement program at the Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities (ARCC). The program raises understanding and provides practical tools and support for research teams and community research partnerships to be more racially equitable.
Eric Chang, Postdoctoral Lecturer, Mathematics, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences;Clive Newstead, Postdoctoral Lecturer, Mathematics, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; Aaron Greicius, Associate Professor of Instruction, Mathematics, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; and Maria Nastasescu, Assistant Professor of Instruction, Mathematics, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences – for Northwestern Emerging Scholars, to continue and enhance an active-learning community that promotes the retention of women, students from underrepresented groups, and first-generation students in Mathematics. Students in the program meet on a weekly basis and work in groups to explore new mathematical ideas and their real-world applications.
Khalilah Gates, Assistant Professor, Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine; Constance Wright, Assistant Dean Academic Standing, Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; and Jonathan Moreira, Assistant Professor, Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine – for Mentorship Impacting Diversity and Academic Success, to create a structured mentorship program focused on establishing mentoring relationships between residents/fellows and faculty from underrepresented groups. The new program will be an addition to other mentorship programs at Feinberg geared toward undergraduate and medical students from underrepresented groups.
Tara Gill, Instructor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine; and Claudio Rivera, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Feinberg School of Medicine – for Building Health Equity Framework among Public Health Invested Medical Students and High School Scholars, to engage high school students from Black and Brown communities in Chicago through an innovative program at Feinberg in partnership with Mikva Challenge. The program will focus on the mental health needs of the students’ communities to develop educational materials and will serve as a unique learning opportunity for Northwestern medical students to learn about health outcomes and disparities in these communities.
Claudia Haase, Assistant Professor, Human Development and Social Policy, School of Education and Social Policy; Quinn Mulroy, Assistant Professor, Human Development and Social Policy, School of Education and Social Policy; and Regina Logan, Assistant Professor of Instruction and Adviser, Human Development and Social Policy, School of Education and Social Policy – for Connection: Increasing Diversity and Inclusion in Northwestern’s Graduate Education, to encourage a more diverse and inclusive graduate student population in the Human Development and Social Policy doctoral program through a “first look” weekend for prospective students.
Patricia Loew, Professor, Journalism,Medill School of Journalism; and Josh Honn, Librarian, Digital Humanities, University Library – for Indigenous Tour of Northwestern II, to enhance the Indigenous Tour of Northwestern by making the tour more visible to the University community and campus visitors.
Leah C. Neubauer, Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine; and Virginia Bishop, Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine – for Enhancing the Program in Public Health’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative, to enrich and scale the equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts of the Program in Public Health by further focusing on the issues of health equity, social justice, and racism in its curriculum. In addition, to further focus and foster greater collaboration between the program’s faculty, students, and community/governmental partners.
Sekile Nzinga, Director, Women's Center; and Sarah Brown, Program Manager, Women's Center – for Feminism and Social Change, to create an undergraduate course to be offered through the Women’s Center and the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program. The innovative course, which includes the development of an online repository and archive, will explore the state of feminism today and its prospects for the future, with particular attention paid to feminist praxis and activism in Chicago.
Nitasha Sharma, Associate Professor, Asian American Studies Program, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; Shalini Shankar, Professor, Anthropology, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences; and Ji-Yeon Yuh, Associate Professor, History, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences – for ASAM 2020@NU, to host a seminal conference designed to convene scholars and future leaders of Asian American Studies units across the nation to discuss the future of the field. In addition, to create a set of shared strategies for further institutionalization in colleges and universities hoping to develop this field.
Linda Suleiman, Assistant Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery, Feinberg School of Medicine; and Diane Wayne, Professor, Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine – for A Resident-led Mentorship Program for Underrepresented Minority Medical Students: The STRIVE Initiative,to expand the Student to Resident Institutional Vehicle for Excellence (STRIVE), an initiative at Feinberg that prepares students and physicians from underrepresented groups for academic medicine through mentorship. STRIVE provides academic, social, and professional support while preparing students for the unique obstacles experienced during training.
