Basic Sewing - Pillows

Instructor: Adam Lazar

  • Saturday: 1 pm - 4 pm, February 1
    • Fee: $20

Create a pillow for your home while learning how to sew on a machine! Develop important skills such as threading the machine, choosing the right stitch and needle for your fabric and plenty of tips and tricks to make your sewing project fun and successful. You’ll leave this class with a completed pillow and the knowledge to start and complete your own projects independently.

Basic Sewing - Drawstring Backpacks

Instructor: Adam Lazar

  • Saturday: 1 pm - 4 pm, February 8 
    • Fee: $20

Stash your stuff in style with a drawstring backpack that you sew yourself! Develop important skills such as threading the sewing machine, choosing the right stitch and needle for your fabric and plenty of tips and tricks to make your sewing project fun and successful. You’ll leave this class with a completed backpack and the knowledge to start and complete your own projects independently.

Keep your pencils, power cords, snacks, jewelry or makeup secure and in style with a zippered pouch! You’ll create this project on a sewing machine while developing important skills such as threading the machine, choosing the right stitch and needle for your fabric and plenty of tips and tricks to make your sewing project fun and successful. You’ll leave this class with a completed pouch and the knowledge to start and complete your own projects independently. All supplies are included.

Cartoon Storytelling 

Instructor: Steven Fischer 

  • Saturday: 1 pm - 4 pm, January 18
    • Fee: $20

 Introduce yourself to the power of personal storytelling in cartoons. Emmy-winning filmmaker and cartoonist Steven Fischer takes participants through the creative process, demonstrating how we position ourselves to generate ideas that have impact and meaning. You will experience a range of writing and drawing exercises as you develop characters, locations, environments and themes. Along the way, explore the philosophy and psychology of inspiration, cartoon art, creativity and storytelling. No drawing experience is necessary!

Learn to Knit - Basic Knitting 1

Instructor: Anne Howard

  • Saturday: 1 pm - 4 pm, January 25
    • Fee: $20

Pick up a meditative and creative hobby in just three hours! Fall is a great time to make yourself a warm new scarf. Learn the basics of knitting and develop a pattern for your first project.

*All supplies are included (knitting needles and a skein of yarn)

 

Learn to Knit - Basic Knitting 2

After reviewing knitting basics, learn how to combine knitting and purling to follow patterns and complete projects.

Cozy Teapots 

Instructor: Cristina Hernandez 

  • Saturday: 1 pm - 4 pm, January 25
    • Fee: $16

This workshop will teach decorative glaze techniques and cover a brief history of Teapots. Participants will each have an English Teapot to decorate and glaze.

Screen Printing Hearts on Cards

Instructor: Debra Blade

  • Thursday: 6 pm - 8:30 pm, February 6
    • Fee: $16

This workshop will cover basic screen printing techniques. Participants will create images to print and personalize special greeting cards in time for Valentine’s Day

Please contact the Mini Courses staff at minicourses@u.northwestern.edu to schedule any of the following workshops or to request others! We will work to put together a workshop that fits your needs. Please note that at least six individuals must attend the workshop.
