Tamara Johnson to Head Multicultural Student Affairs

June 3, 2010
Tamara A. Johnson, currently interim executive director of Multicultural Student Affairs since last September, has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis, announced William Banis, vice president for student affairs.

"The search committee was impressed with her understanding of student needs, her skill set and her passion for the work.  In addition, the positive student feedback about her performance since September was a very important factor in our making this appointment," said Banis.

Johnson joined Northwestern in 2006 as associate director of University Career Services.  Prior to Northwestern, she worked as an organizational development consultant for the U.S. Department Veteran Affairs and in the university counseling centers at Illinois State and Indiana State where she also worked in residential life.  She has additional experience in the Office of Minority Student Affairs at the University of Illinois.

Johnson earned her bachelor's and master's degrees plus an advanced certificate in education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her doctorate in counseling psychology from Indiana State University.
