H1N1 Flu Vaccinations Available Nov. 17-19

November 11, 2009 | by Alan K. Cubbage
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Depending on the availability of vaccine, the Evanston Department of Health and Human Services and Northwestern University plan to make H1N1 flu vaccinations available on the Evanston campus Nov. 17 to 19.

The vaccine will be made available at no charge to all students, faculty and staff from both the Evanston and Chicago campuses. A valid Northwestern WildCARD and proof of age, such as a driver's license, will be required for all persons wishing to receive the vaccination.

The vaccination shots will be available at two locations on the Evanston campus: Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Dr., in the Northwestern Room (202); and Patten Gymnasium, 2407 Sheridan Road. The vaccination centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, Wednesday, Nov. 18 and Thursday, Nov. 19.

The first day, Tuesday, Nov. 17, vaccinations will be reserved for persons in the priority groups identified by the Centers for Disease Control. All other members of the Northwestern community are asked to wait until the second or third day before being vaccinated. The priority groups identified by the CDC are:

  • Persons aged 6 months through 24 years
  • Pregnant women
  • Persons who live with or provide care for infants aged less than 6 months
  • Health care and emergency medical services personnel
  • Persons aged 25 through 64 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications, such as chronic illnesses or suppressed immune systems.

On the first day only, in order to minimize wait times, vaccinations will be given at  Norris University Center and Patten Gymnasium at designated times, based on last name.

Norris University Center, Northwestern Room, 202:

  • Last names A-G: 9 to 11 a.m.
  • Last names H-Q: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Last names R-Z: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

            Patten Gymnasium:

  • Last names R-Z: 9 to 11 a.m.
  • Last names H-Q: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Last names A-G: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The vaccinations will be given via a shot in the upper arm. Please wear clothing that will enable easy access to your arm.

Students, faculty and staff coming from the Chicago campus who are planning to take the intercampus shuttle are advised to wait until after 9 a.m. as the shuttle buses departing Chicago prior to that time are generally full.

Family members and other dependents are NOT eligible for these on-campus vaccinations. Only those persons with a valid WildCARD and proof of age may receive the shot.

Students under the age of 18 must obtain parental consent. Consent forms are available from the Health Service web site. For forms and additional information, go to http://www.nuhs.northwestern.edu/evanston/default.aspx
