There was no shortage of purple pride when members of the NU Club of Boston welcomed Kelly Amonte Hiller, coach of the two-time NCAA champion women’s lacrosse team, to the Case Athletic Center at Boston University June 28. In May, David Zarefsky (C68, GC69, 74), former dean of the School of Communication, joined 50 members and friends at the Union Club of Boston for his discussion of political rhetoric, “The Red States vs. the Blue States … or Is Only Northwestern Purple?”
On June 1 more than 200 students and young alumni gathered at the Northwestern School of Law’s Thorne Auditorium on the Chicago campus to learn engineering professor and former CEO William White’s (McC61) secrets for business success and receive a free copy of his book From Day One: CEO Advice to Launch an Extraordinary Career (Prentice Hall, 2005). The NU Club of Chicago and School of Continuing Studies co-sponsored the event.
Later that month Chicago and NUGALA (Northwestern University Gay and Lesbian Alumni) club members enjoyed a Monster Piano Concert at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion. The show featured 30 School of Music faculty members and alumni, including Dean Toni-Marie Montgomery, performing such classics as Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Rossini’s William Tell Overture on 10 Steinway grand pianos.
The club’s summer calendar also included Cocktails with the King, a sold-out reception and private showing of the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibit at the Field Museum. The reception featured a presentation by history professor Carl Petry, a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence and expert in medieval and modern Egypt. More than 300 alumni and guests attended. The club also toured Chicago’s Graceland Cemetery in July.
Members of the NU Club of Kansas City enjoyed a performance of The Trip to Bountiful at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre May 20. Eric Rosen (GC93, 99), co-founder and artistic director of Chicago’s About Face Theatre, directed the production. After the show, stage manager Mary Honour (C99) led members on a private backstage tour.
Alumni from the NU Club of Washington, D.C., gathered June 8 at the Charles Sumner School Museum and Archives to discuss homebuying. Members also enjoyed a performance of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company production Love-Lies-Bleeding June 20 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and a private post-show discussion with the show’s lead actress, Martha Lavey (C79, GC86, 94), Steppenwolf artistic director (see “A Stage Presence,” winter 2004).
