Elevator
Monday-Friday from 7am-5pm during both weeks of installation, the elevators will be operated by a staff member. There will be limited access to the elevators for residents during those times and we encourage all who are able to use the stairs. Anyone with mobility concerns or small children will have access to the elevators by calling the Engelhart Desk but wait times may be increased.

Boxes & Tags
  • Complimentary boxes are available at the front desk to assist you with temporarily displacing your belongings

You can also get tags from the front desk:

  • one that will say "Do Not Discard"
    • so that you can tag any of your personal furniture to remain in your apartment
  • and a blank tag on which you can write "Discard"
    • for personal furniture that you no longer want or need.
    • We will discard any furniture item free of charge.
How to Prepare

On the days leading up to the furniture switch for your apartment, you should do the following:

  • Go through your belongings & now is a great time to discard or donate clothes that are stained or damaged beyond repair or donate items that you aren't using.

  • There will be recycling and donation bins in the basement parking garage
  • Any of your personal furniture that no longer serves you and your family, can be removed as part of this furniture exchange process.
  • Once the move for your apartment is complete, the University will not move any of your personal furniture.

  • Pack up your belongings from your University issued dresser.
  • Please make sure that the belongings are stored out of the way. On the floor of your closet is an ideal location.
On the morning of your move
  • Strip your bed(s) of all linens, including mattress pads. The bed and mattress will be replaced.
  • Make one more sweep of your apartment to confirm that pathways are clear, and all University issued furniture is ready to be removed.

  • The keys for the apartments can be checked out from the front desk.

FAQ-How do I make the date of my move work for me and my schedule?

The overall move schedule cannot be changed. If your apartment has been well prepared for the move, you do not need to be in your apartment for the move. University Housing staff will let the first crew of movers into your apartment to remove the furniture, and any other pieces of your personal furniture that you have tagged to leave your apartment, and then your apartment will be locked until the next crew arrives later in the day to install your new furniture.

Again, there will be a period of up to several hours, where your apartment will not have any University issued furniture.

You’ll then get to come home to all new furniture.

What if this project will cause me major inconvenience?
While this is an exciting project that we believe will improve the quality of living in Engelhart Hall, we understand that a small number of residents may wish to forego receiving new furniture for a variety of reasons.

If you would prefer not to receive any new furniture, please follow the link below to submit an opt-out form. Please note that if you choose to opt out, no furniture will be replaced in your apartment until the end of your current contract (or during summer 2020 for continuing residents).

How to make my move go smoothly

Clean out anything that no longer sparks joy from your apartment.

This includes:

  • Closet
  • Dresser (which should be completely emptied on move day)
  • Bedside tables (which should be completely emptied on move day)
  • Bookcases
  • Under the bed, or on the bed
  • In the desk (which should be completely emptied on move day)
  • In the kitchen – soy sauce packets from last April, we’re looking at you)
  • Coffee table
In your bedroom, have everything, meaning the clothes and items that are in your dresser or in/on your nightstand, placed in your closet. This will allow the movers to get the old furniture out and new furniture in a relatively small space quickly, and without damaging any of your personal belongings.

In the living room, pack up your personal belongings and stack them in the kitchen area. This will allow the movers to get the old furniture out and new furniture in a relatively small space quickly, and without damaging any of your personal belongings.

The residence hall staff will be stopping by your apartment in the days leading up to your move to make sure have taken all the steps outlined above to ready your apartment.

FAQ-May I keep any of the old University-provided furniture that is in my apartment?

Yes. Students who wish to receive new furniture must accept all pieces of the new University furniture. You may optionally choose to keep certain pieces of the old furniture as well (for example the desk). We strongly encourage all students to visit the tour rooms before deciding to keep additional furniture. If you would like to keep any of the old furniture, you must label it to keep using tags that will be available at the front desk prior to the project. If you later decide to have an old item removed, please let us know (note that there may be a delay in having it removed).

BE READY!

If your apartment is not ready on the day of the move, then it will not have the existing furniture removed and will not receive new furniture.

Conditions that would result in a non-move:

  • Personal items still in University issued furniture
  • Bedding still on beds
  • No clear path to remove and install furniture
