Northwestern Buffett Visiting Scholars

The Visiting Scholar Program at the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs allows visitors from around the world to collaborate with Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.

Application Process

If you are interested in becoming a visiting scholar at the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, please submit a complete application in a single PDF file to

The application must contain the following English language documents to be considered for the program:

  • Application Form
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Endorsement letter: This letter should come from a Northwestern Buffett group director or Northwestern Buffett faculty member which explains why your visit will be valuable to the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs.
  • Sponsoring Entity (Home Institution) Letter: Please supply a letter on official letterhead from your home institution that confirms (1) your status per the institution and (2) the intention of the institution to continue your affiliation throughout the duration of your specified appointment period. The letter should include the name and contact information of an individual from the sponsoring institution who can be contacted for verification. If this letter is in a language other than English, please also provide an English translation.
  • Research Proposal: A brief description of your proposed research activities and what you hope to accomplish as a visiting scholar at Northwestern Buffett. Please include how being at Northwestern Buffett is of particular importance in advancing your research agenda and how your visit will enhance the Northwestern community.

All visiting scholar requests go through the following review:

  • A faculty and staff review committee will meet once a quarter. The committee comprises two faculty members from different disciplines, two representatives from OISS, and a representative from the Office for Research. The dates of application review are below. Once your complete application is received, it will be reviewed with the next review cycle.
    • Applications received by July 8, 2019 will be reviewed by July 15, 2019
    • Applications received by October 7, 2019 will be reviewed by October 14, 2019
    • Applications received by January 20, 2020 will be reviewed by January 27, 2020
    • Applications received by April 13, 2020 will be reviewed by April 20, 2020
  • Once approved by the review committee, requests will be forwarded to the executive director of the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs for approval, and then to Office for Research for final approval.
  • Requests must be submitted at least three to six months prior to arrival. In cases where centers have an exceptional case, where crucial ongoing research projects will be impacted, OISS will make a determination on a waiver.

Approval Process

If the appointment is approved, the visitor will receive a letter of invitation from the executive director.

The visitor will then work with Theresa Johnson and various campus offices to complete the next steps in the application process. This includes:


Visiting scholars receive a NetID, University email account (valid for the duration of the appointment), access to library facilities, and elective health insurance coverage. In rare cases, modest office space and furnishings may also be available. Housing is the sole responsibility of the visiting scholar.

Visiting scholars do not receive financial remuneration for the period of appointment.

Requirements and Regulations

Health Insurance

In most cases, visiting scholars need to purchase insurance coverage through the Office of Risk Management. Visiting scholars who wish to use health insurance other than that offered by the University may request to waive enrollment in the Visiting Scholar Health Insurance Plan. To qualify for a waiver, outside insurance must meet or exceed the level of coverage required by Northwestern University.

J-1 Regulations

If Northwestern University sponsors the visiting scholar for a J-1 visa, the visitor must abide by the J-1 visa requirements.
