Tax deadline for 2022 is approaching:
APRIL 18,2023

ALL international students and scholars who were in the U.S. for any period of time during the 2022 calendar year must file a federal tax return.

Even if you did not earn any income, if you were physically in the U.S. on F or J status anytime between    January 1 – December 31, 2022, you are obligated to file a Form 8843 with the IRS (the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. tax authorities).

Also, if you earned any taxable US source income, you may need to file a federal tax return with the IRS. Depending on your individual circumstances, you may also need to file a state tax return(s).

Learn more on the Taxes section of the OISS website.

Virtual tax workshop sponsored by OISS:
Sunday, April 2 at 1:00 PM. See event details

Beware of Scams

During tax season we typically see an increase in scam phone calls and emails that our international community receives, so we wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be vigilant in protecting your identity and finances. You should never give money to someone you don't know or before you've verified their identity.

DHS or the IRS will never use the internet or telephone to contact you to ask for money or identity information. It's important to note that you shouldn't always trust your caller ID; phone numbers can be manipulated to appear as a legitimate government agency, Northwestern offices, or even the police.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Virtual Workshop

OISS offers online workshops for F-1 international students interested in pursuing work authorization in the U.S. through Optional Practical Training (OPT). The Zoom workshop will cover OPT eligibility requirements, application timelines and application requirements, and more. All F-1 international students interested in applying for OPT are encouraged to attend.

April 6th at 12:00 noon - see event details and meeting link
