Open Enrollment Dates: Oct 22 - Nov 9

The Open Enrollment period for January 1, 2019 plan changes will occur from Monday, October 22 at 8 a.m. to Friday, November 9 at 5 p.m. Look for booklets to arrive in the U.S. mail in early October.

Staff Survey Action Teams Update

Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer Pam Beemer recently provided an update on the progress being made by the Staff Survey action teams and workgroups across the University. School and unit leaders and their Staff Survey Engagement Champions have been driving progress specific to their results, and peer-to-peer idea exchange meetings were recently held. In addition, four cross-University action teams have been working diligently to develop recommendations to enhance the staff experience across the University. These teams are on track to present recommendations to Executive Sponsors Jonathan Holloway, Craig Johnson, and Pam Beemer this fall.

New Process for Unpaid Interns and Volunteers

Effective October 1, schools/units no longer need to submit requests for Unpaid Interns and Volunteers to Human Resources for review. The Department of Labor (DOL) recently provided updated guidance on determining whether unpaid interns are employees. This updated criteria is less rigid than the previous six-factor test, eliminating confusion and making it easier for schools/units to determine whether their internship meets the criteria to be unpaid. 

Using the new tools and resources available online, department administrators, or their designee, may evaluate the intern/volunteer arrangement through their own internal process, and determine if it meets the criteria to be unpaid. Once the department administrators, or their designee, has reviewed and approved the arrangement, they should then submit a request to HR Talent Acquisition via a new online form to have a background check conducted.

Resources for sick leave requests & approvals

myHR Quick Guides are available for employees submitting paid sick leave requests and supervisors approving sick hours in the new myHR pages. Additionally, training will continue in October with the myHR & Kronos Paid Sick Leave sessions to review policy guidelines, FAQs, and the sick hour accruals in myHR Self Service.

Update registration for HRS/myHR courses

Human Resource System (HRS) and myHR Administration trainings are available for administrators to gain the necessary HR business process knowledge and myHR Administration security access. Effective September 1, attendees are subject to a $50 cancellation fee to maintain schedules for the HR Operations team.

The end of the year is quickly approaching. Efforts to prepare your Northwestern 2018 Form W-2 and Form 1095-C have begun. Please review and update, if necessary, your home address details in myHR today to enable timely delivery of your 2018 tax materials.
