2011 Service Excellence Recognition Luncheon (Quarterly)

The Service Excellence Recognition Luncheon was held on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at the Rebecca Crown Center, Hardin Hall. Thirty-three staff members of the Northwestern community were recognized for going above and beyond their regular job duties.  The next Service Excellence Luncheon will be held Monday, November 21, 2011. FASIS Updates



Since its implementation in 1997, Northwestern's Human Resources Information System (HRIS) has evolved far beyond its initial payroll and benefits modules.  Recognizing the opportunity to provide a broader range of services, in 2009 the Office of the Provost approved a proposal to build a faculty and staff information system on the foundation of HRIS.

On August 15, 2011, the first outcome of the project was delivered to system users via two new pages that track faculty appointments and activities, with more exciting features to follow.  To coincide with the inclusion of faculty information, HRIS rebranded both the system and its department to the "Faculty and Staff Information System" (FASIS).  This updated name better describes the information provided by the system itself, while also reflecting this Division's mission of providing resources for and about all of the University's employees.

Over the next few weeks and into Winter quarter, additional FASIS pages and projects will be rolled out to users, including Appointment History, Salary History, and Employment Dates pages; the Northwestern Scholars system; and the FASIS Data Mart.  As these enhancements are implemented, existing users will be notified and demonstrations will be scheduled.

FASIS PeopleTools Update

In early September, FASIS was upgraded to a new version of PeopleTools.  While the upgrade did not result in significant changes to system functionality, it will provide enhanced security options, fixes for various browser problems, and other minor enhancements.  Details regarding the upgrade, including resolved issues and minor enhancements, can be found on the FASIS homepage.


Exempt Staff Leave Accruals

Exempt staff must record all vacation, sick, personal floating holiday, bereavement, and jury duty days taken in Fiscal Year 2011 (between September 1, 2010 - August 31, 2011).  The deadline for entering all FY11 entries is Friday September 9, 2011.  Supervisors of exempt staff must then approve all recorded time.

Phone Number Updates

Have you updated your work phone number recently?

To do so, sign into FASIS Self Service, select the Online Directory page, go to the Phone Number section, where you can add or change your work number and save.  Click the Return to the Online Directory link, and then check the Phone Indicator box to have your work number appear in the Northwestern University Online Directory.  The number will appear the next day.

Peer-to-Peer File Sharing


Q:  Did you know that it is illegal to download and share unauthorized copyright- protected files onto your computer?  Did you know that many peer-to-peer programs start automatically when you turn on your computer?


A:  As a reminder, the use of the Northwestern network or equipment to download or share copyright-protected material in violation of federal copyright law is prohibited. 


Employees who engage in these practices are in violation of University policy (see "Rights and Responsibilities for the Use of Central Network and Computing Resources at Northwestern University" at This type of activity is subject to disciplinary action, as well as civil and criminal penalties.


Media owners are continuing their efforts to curtail unlawful file sharing, including movies, music, television shows, and software.  Several high profile cases have recently been resolved, with substantial awards being given to the industry.
If you have engaged in file-sharing activity (e.g., downloading of movies, music, TV shows or software) in violation of federal copyright law, you should immediately cease any such illegal file-sharing activity and the use or distribution of any illegally obtained material.  Peer-to-peer software should be deleted from University-owned machines unless there is a business, educational, or research need for the software.  Also, when working remotely on the traditional VPN, keep in mind that all your traffic goes through the Northwestern network and is subject to these same penalties. Northwestern requires members of its community to respect the intellectual property of others and to abide by all applicable laws.

2012 Health & Benefits Fair

Internal Transfer Requirements 

If you are a staff member of the University and are thinking about transferring to a new position, it is important that you understand the requirements for transfer before applying. To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, a staff member must meet the following requirements: 

  • Be in your current position for at least one year.*
  • Have an overall rating of "satisfactory" or "effective" (that is, a rating of "3" or higher) on your most recent performance review.
  • Have not received any disciplinary action for the 6 months prior to the transfer request.
  • Meet the minimum qualifications of the position(s) to which you are applying. 

* Please note that no specified service period is required for a transfer or promotion within a department, although a department may reasonably limit such transfers or promotions.
