Alcohol Data Dashboard

About The Data Dashboard

Northwestern University is committed to advancing the health of all students and the campus community. Therefore, assessing college health factors that impact student academic performance, retention, and campus life is key in the development of effective health-related prevention and intervention programs for students.

To support this commitment, we are providing the community with easy access to our most frequently asked about data surrounding behaviors related to alcohol use among our Undergraduate student population. While this data does not encompass 100 percent of the data collected on student substance use, it is a strong starting point to better understanding student alcohol use at Northwestern.

Below you can read about each of the surveys we utilize to collect data on students drinking behavior. To dig deeper into the data, click the thumbnails to the right, or navigate through each page on the left sidebar. You will have the ability to manipulate data sets by class year.

AlcoholEdu for College

AlcoholEdu for College is administered annually to incoming first-year classes beginning in mid-August prior to students arriving on campus. Students complete a follow-up survey approximately 6-8 weeks after the start of Fall quarter to measure their drinking behavior after being on campus. The graphic below shows the changes in quantity/level of drinking from the pre-arrival survey to the level of drinking approximately 6-8 weeks after arriving on campus.

You will find data from the classes arriving on campus in Fall 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Core Survey

The Core Survey help us determine the patterns of alcohol and other drug consumption and examine attitudes and perceptions of alcohol and other drug use among Northwestern students. In April 2016, 3000 undergraduate students were randomly selected to participate in the survey, and 802 undergraduate students responded to at least part of the survey.

National College Health Assessment II (NCHA II)

The National College Health Assessment II is a nationally recognized research survey that collects data on students’ health habits, behaviors, and perceptions. While Northwestern administers this survey every few years, the data currently presented on this website does not include any data from our NCHA II surveys. Northwestern most recently administered the NCHA II in Winter of 2017 with 524 undergraduate students responding to at least part of the survey.
