Facilities Management strives to minimize the disruption to Rebecca Crown Center occupants. The restrooms break room, and lactation room will be closed through the construction duration to allow for expedited construction.

Common Space Program

In support of the Northwestern University Strategic Plan, Northwestern University recently established the Common Space Program that is committed to supporting the continuous renewal and improvement of the University’s interior common spaces.

Scope of Work

This project will positively impact the functionality and appearance of the break room, adjacent men’s and women’s restrooms, and lactation room. The project will also add a gender-neutral restrooms.

Break Room

The break room will undergo a major renovation to modernize the space and provide enhanced functionality. While the size of the space will not change, the space will allow for both ‘grab and go’ or ‘stay and relax’ functionality by dividing the space into zones that promote prep, eat, and recharge. The room will be reconfigured to allow for a contemporary service area that includes new appliance including two (2) refrigerator/freezers and two (2) microwaves. A sink will also be available as well as cabinets for service space. New furniture will be provided to accommodate a variety of new seating types.

Please see the following images reflecting the PROJECT SCOPE OF WORK

Restrooms

The men’s and women’s restrooms (rooms G588 and G590) adjacent to the existing restroom will be renovated. All existing finishes will be replaced including new wall finishes, flooring, ceiling, toilets, urinals, partitions, sinks, and countertops. The men’s restroom will expand to include one additional urinal through the remove of a small closet. Changing stations will be included in each restroom. A gender-open restroom will also be added as part of this project.

Lactation Room

The existing lactation room will be renovated and reconfigured so that it is accessed off the central corridor via wildcard access opposed to through the existing women’s restroom. The room will allow space for one nursing mother who will be provided with a comfortable and adjustable chair, mobile table for her laptop if desired, a side table, and foot-rest. The room will include storage lockers, a sink, an under-counter refrigerator, and a changing table.

To gain access the lactation room, please contact Lori Anne Henderson, the Director of Work/Life Resources in the Office of Human Resources, at la-henderson@northwestern.edu or 847-491-3612.

Access

The break room, lactation room, and restrooms will be closed during this renovation. Understanding the inconvenience this causes, the project team will look to expedite the construction where possible to minimize this interruption.

Break Room Functionality

To allow for this renovation, it is necessary that the break room be taken off-line for the duration of this renovation. During this time, access to vending services will be temporarily located on the ground floor of the north tower under the stairway.

Asbestos Abatement

As with many structures of this era, asbestos containing materials are known to be in the Rebecca Crown. Abatement of these materials will occur after working hours and air quality tests will be conducted to ensure a safe working environment.

Power Interruptions

Power interruptions will be necessary during this renovation and will occur outside of business hours. If special accommodations are required, Crown occupants are requested to contact Carrie West at their earliest convenience for schedule coordination. Users will be provided 48 hours advanced notice prior to electrical service interruption.
