Inaugural Facilities Newsletter

dangelo

Welcome to our first edition of the all-new Northwestern University Facilities newsletter. This publication is written to showcase Facilities support at the University. We hope that this newsletter builds on the sense of community that makes Northwestern a special place. You may have noticed a slight change in our department name, which was previously “Facilities Management.” Because our service lines have recently expanded with the addition of Auxiliary Services, we have broadened our name to simply “Facilities.”

For those less familiar, Northwestern’s Facilities is a relatively small team with a range of activities.

Northwestern University Facilities

  • Operates and maintains the 222 buildings and 15,600,000 square feet of space on the Evanston and Chicago Campuses, completing an average of 75,000 work requests each year.
Maintains the landscaping and grounds, and removes the snow on our 296 acres.
  • Plans, designs and builds new buildings, and oversees the renovation of existing spaces to meet the changing needs of our Northwestern students, faculty, researchers, and staff.
  • Manages the University’s real estate holdings and negotiates the leases for properties in San Francisco, Miami, New York, Washington D.C., Evanston, Skokie, and Chicago – wherever a Northwestern footprint is needed.
  • Coordinates the sustainability activities of students, faculty, researchers, and staff so that our efforts achieve common goals.
  • Delivers mail to almost every building on the Chicago and Evanston campus making up to 180 stops daily.
  • Supports 24,000 Wildcard users with 12,000 new faculty, staff, and student cards produced each year.
  • Manages Travel Services for nearly 14,000 Northwestern trips annually.
  • Manage Trademark and Vending with over 200 Northwestern brand licensees per year 900 pieces of brand-related artwork approvals each month.

In short, we are focused on Northwestern’s Values and work hard to help achieve the University’s Priorities:

Transparent and meaningful communications are important aspects of our service commitment. Some of the work in our construction and maintenance roles can create disruptions, and we work hard to eliminate or minimize those disruptions. For the latest information, please use our Weekly Construction Report and Weekly Research Disruption Report which can be found on the Northwestern Facilities website. The Weekly Research Disruption Report offers information up to a year in advance. For a full view of our major projects, visit the Northwestern Facilities Project website which features live webcams, project facts, and points of contact.

We are providing this newsletter to you, our valued partners, to further our commitment to transparency and communication. As this is our first edition, I am hopeful that you will provide feedback. Please let us know how we can improve the content or share topics of interest in Facilities by calling or sending a note to Paul Sevilla at paul.sevilla@northwestern.edu or 847-491-5875.
