Labor Day Shutdown

The Central Utility Plant of the Facilities Management Department on the Evanston Campus will be shut down to perform routine annual maintenance beginning Friday, September 4, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. Normal operations will resume on Monday September 7, 2015, at 10:00 p.m. (Labor Day weekend). This shutdown is essential and is scheduled during this period to cause the least inconvenience to occupants of the affected buildings. There will be no deviation from this schedule.

The exact effect of this shutdown will vary from building to building; but, in general, those buildings normally serviced by the central steam and chilled water system will not have heating or hot water and will have no air conditioning except for science buildings. Shutdown details for science buildings are provided below.

If you have questions or require additional information, please contact Facilities Management: facilities-management@northwestern.edu

Shutdown session 2: Sunday, September 6 (6 p.m.) to Monday, September 8, 2015 (7 a.m.)
1. All outdoor air supply fans for laboratories, and offices
2. All exhaust for laboratories, offices, and fume hoods including perchloric and radioisotopes
3. All cleanroom recirculating fans

Note: Throughout the shutdown period, chilled water feeding cleanrooms’ four recirculating fans will be shut off to avoid overcooling.
Monday, September 7 (6 p.m.) to Tuesday, September 8 (6 a.m.)
In order to complete the emergency repair work on the remaining faulty main building electrical switch, normal power from ComEd will be disconnected as was done on August 17, 2015. During this period:
1. All ventilation (outdoor air supply and fume hood/general exhaust) will be off.

Very important: With sashes closed, vapor concentrations inside hoods could rise and cause reactions between vapors, liquids, and solids in open containers. Close all fume hood sashes and cover containers of all fume-generating materials inside fume hoods.
2. All normal electrical outlets will have no power throughout the building.
3. Only red electrical outlets will have power. These are supported by the emergency generator.
4. Orange outlets will have NO power. These are NOT supported by the generator. Their distinction from regular and red outlets is that they have isolated ground.
5. All elevator services except for Elevator #3 (east freight) will be turned off.
6. Cleanrooms’ EF-1 and EF-2 will remain operational being on emergency power.
7. Life Safety Systems, i.e., emergency lighting, exit lights, fire alarms, cold rooms, and fire protection systems will remain operational, being supported by the emergency generator.
8. Laboratory services such as chilled water for equipment cooling, vacuum system, RO/DI water system, and building compressed air will not be available.

FM will provide assistance (e.g., setting up extension cords and temporary electrical panel connections) as was completed during the August 17 outage. Details will be coordinated with building occupants. Upon restoration of normal power on Tuesday morning, please wait for FM personnel to disconnect the extension cords.
Please notify FM of any freezer common rooms that will require blower fans.5
