Reporting Process

All members of the University community are responsible for creating a working, learning, and living environment that is free of discrimination and harassment, including sexual harassment.

If someone discloses an incident of discrimination, harassment or sexual misconduct (including sexual assault, stalking, dating or domestic violence) to you, please take the following steps.

  1. Listen

Confirm the person's safety. If they are not safe, help them create a plan to get to a safe place. Call 911 if needed.

Provide nonjudgmental support. Avoid questions that suggest blame or show doubt. Respond with compassion and sensitivity.

  2. Refer

Review reporting options with the person. Learn more about  how to report an incident.

Direct the person to resources.  Both on-campus confidential resources and off-campus resources are available.

  3. Report

If applicable, explain your obligation to report the information. Read about reporting obligations for Northwestern employees and others with teaching or supervisory authority.

Contact the appropriate party to report the incident. Reports can also be filed via EthicsPoint.
