Diversity, Equity and Inclusion COVID-19 Resources

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI) at Northwestern University provides an important voice and valuable resources during this tremendous time of change. Our colleagues, friends, family and we, ourselves, are all facing enormous uncertainty, yet we are all grounded by our connection to each other.

Our office understands that the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us but will likely magnify and exacerbate social and economic inequities for many. We ask that our friends and colleagues across the University keep our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion at heart as we adjust and reimagine the work ahead of all of us. In this unprecedented moment, we have been taking note of our brilliant colleagues and students across campus and remotely doing innovative and responsive work to support our campus and our broader community.

We celebrate them and are energized by their tireless commitment, and we plan to recognize their efforts once our world has stabilized. In the meantime, we will continue the critical work of our office by drawing upon our four diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) informed STRANDS to guide our work in this moment and beyond:

                     ACCESS          WELLBEING          ENRICHMENT             EQUITY

We intentionally invoke STRANDS as an activating metaphor, because it offers flexibility, creativity and an understanding that our interconnectedness strengthens Northwestern. We call upon intertwined, multiple meanings in our work that is based in mutual care and grounded in an understanding that we are all obligated to each other, now more than ever.

As such, we are re-imagining yet continuing our initiatives, our collaborations and our community building efforts. Because we are uniquely situated to work across faculty, staff, student and community groups, we are often learning of the emergent COVID-19 needs of our campus community and are collaborating with our colleagues in the Office of the Provost and with campus partners to identify possible solutions.

We also invite you to use and share the COVID-19 related resources that we have curated that may be particularly helpful to underrepresented and marginalized faculty, staff and students and to those working on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives across the campus.
