COVID-19 Testing

The University has established a comprehensive COVID-19 testing system to rapidly assess, test and contact trace faculty, staff and students reporting symptoms of COVID-19, and for those identified through contact tracing.

Guidance on Health and Testing

  • Your primary care physician is likely the best resource for questions about your health and appropriate testing. You should always consult your doctor if you have symptoms or suspect exposure to COVID-19.
  • For medical emergencies, call 911 and notify the dispatch personnel that you may have COVID-19.
  • Illinois Department of Public Health has compiled a list of locations offering testing.

Onsite Testing at Northwestern

Testing is available onsite for Northwestern students, faculty, and staff who display symptoms of COVID-19 or who are identified through Northwestern contact tracing efforts. Due to the limited availability of tests, testing is still allocated primarily to those displaying symptoms and only if ordered by a medical provider.

In Evanston

  • In Evanston, testing currently occurs at Northwestern University Health Services (NUHS), in partnership with Northwestern Medicine (NM). Samples are taken by NUHS and tested in NM labs within 24 hours.
  • Students should contact Health Services to arrange for a test. Health Services will directly inform students of test results and delineate an appropriate strategy for care based on the result of their test.
  • Faculty and staff exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 while on campus, or who have direct contact with a member of the Northwestern University community having infection with COVID-19, will be advised of how to access testing by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
    • As noted above, in many cases, the best solution will often be to obtain testing through your normal medical provider.
    • When that is not possible, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety may refer you to Health Services. Upon receipt of a referral, staff and faculty can contact Health Services at (847) 491-8100 to schedule a test and receive direction on the process to receive the results of the test.
    • Health Services does not provide medical care for faculty and staff other than testing service for referred cases.

In Chicago

  • Medical students and clinical faculty involved in direct patient care should contact the COVID hotline at 312-472-6843 to be routed to NM Corporate Health for testing related to a potential workplace exposure to COVID-19.
  • All other students that suspect they may have COVID-19 should contact the NU Health Service-Chicago at 312-695-8134 to be triaged for testing and appropriate care. The Chicago Health Service/NMG General Internal Medicine clinic is located in the Galter Pavillion, 675 N St Clair St Suite 18-200.
  • All other faculty and staff that suspect they may have COVID-19 should arrange for a test through their NM primary care provider. If you do not have a NM primary care provider, evaluation and testing is available at the Streeterville Immediate Care Center. While walk-ins are available, it is recommended that you utilize the online form to set a time and hold your place in line.
