Responsibilities for Instructors and Students

The Northwestern community will be responsible for certain expectations in instructional spaces. Review space-based guidelines, as well as expectations that are specific to the student and instructor experiences.

Classroom Behaviors

Disinfecting

  • Disinfecting wipes/spray will be provided in each room near the entrance.
  • Instructors/students should navigate to their work area and wipe down all surfaces before use.
  • Instructors/students should hold onto their wipes for the duration of class and dispose of them in the provided waste container, to minimize circulation in the classroom.

Assigned Seating

  • The space has been de-densified to accommodate 6-foot physical distancing.
  • Please use only marked seats, and keep mobile desks/chairs on the designated floor decals facing forward.
  • Students will be assigned seats on the first day of 'in person' instruction to aid with contact tracing, if required.
  • Seating assignments should not change for the duration of the quarter.
  • Instructors should keep a record of students’ assigned seats.

Classroom Dismissal

  • An orderly dismissal will be required to maintain 6’ physical distancing.
  • Dismissal should start with the seat/row closest to the exist exit door and be managed accordingly.

Writing Surfaces

  • Instructors can continue to use writing surfaces within the room.
  • Please clean writing surfaces at the end of each class and disinfect any writing tools used.
  • Instructors are encouraged to bring their own whiteboard markers, chalk, and erasers though these will be available with in the room.
  • To prevent transmission of COVID-19, student use of shared writing elements and surfaces is not encouraged.

Classroom Materials/Handouts

  • Instructors should minimize use of in-room handouts where possible.
  • Consider sending materials electronically to students before the class time.
  • Where needed, it is recommended that handouts be placed at the room entrance to reduce ‘touches.'

Daily Symptom Monitoring

  • Instructors and students must complete their daily symptom survey prior to arriving on campus.
  • Community members may be asked to show their daily status as they enter the classroom and/or at anytime while on campus.

Attendance

As a result of daily symptom monitoring and/or quarantine and isolation requirements, students or faculty may need to refrain from participating in-person in classes and may instead need to participate remotely for a time. We ask for flexibility in these circumstances.
