General Regalia Information

Order Your Regalia

Students who place orders from May 13 through June 1 should please be prepared to share their order date when they pick up their regalia. 

Regalia Pickup

Regalia pickup will begin on Monday June 17th. Please refer to the information below for distribution dates.

Late Orders

Orders will be processed until June 1st. Any order requests after this date will have to be placed at the Northwestern Bookstore during the distribution dates below.

About Your Regalia

Purple keeper gowns custom designed for Northwestern and featuring the University crest are the standard regalia and must be worn by all participating candidates. Tassels feature the Northwestern seal signet and are worn on the left side at all times.

Bachelor’s degree regalia include a souvenir stole. Advanced degree candidates wear hoods. The lining of the Northwestern hood is purple and gold, and the color of the velvet border of the hood indicates the academic area. Please see the School Convocation pages for tassel and hood border colors.

The Bachelor and Masters gown are made of GreenWeaver fabric. This sustainable fabric is made of 23 plastic bottles and can be recycled after graduation if the graduate chooses not to keep their regalia. Doctoral gown are custom rentals and must be returned to the Northwestern Bookstore that is located in the Norris University Center after the students last ceremony..

Regalia Guidelines

Candidates may not alter or decorate their regalia in any way. Doing so may interfere with their ability to participate in events including Commencement, Convocation, and any hooding ceremony.

Honor Cords and Stoles Guidelines

Degree candidates are eligible to wear one or more of the following honor cords and/or stoles during the commencement ceremony and school or college convocations.

College/School Honor Cord

College/School honor cords are given to undergraduate and graduate degree candidates who are candidates for graduation with high honors within their respective school or college.

Membership, Leadership & Service Honor Cords, Stoles & Pins

These honor cords and stoles may be worn for designation of membership, achievement, leadership or service. Please check with the respective student organization or campus department for their honor cord guidelines and distribution.

Guidelines for Receiving Honor Cords

Eligible students who receive high honors from their college or school will pick up their honor cords from the dean’s office prior to graduation. Eligible students who receive membership, leadership & service honor cords, stoles and pins will pick up their honor cords, stoles and pins from the respective department or organization who is giving out that honor. The Commencement Office does not distribute honor cords, stoles, and pins.

Regalia Distribution Dates

Evanston Campus
Distribution for all regalia will be held in the Northwestern University Bookstore located in the Norris University Center. Students will need to have their Wildcard and/or their order confirmation when picking up their regalia.

If regalia is not picked up by Thursday June 20th before noon, students can pick it up at Gate C at Ryan Field on Friday June 21st at 7am.

Chicago Campus
Distribution for all regalia will be held in the Abbott Hall bookstore for the Kellogg School of Management night and weekend students as well as the School of Professional Studies students.  Students will need to have their Wildcard and/or their order confirmation when picking up their regalia.

If regalia is not picked up by Wednesday June 19th at noon, students can pick it up at Gate C at Ryan Field on Friday June 21st at 7am.

*Please note that regalia does not need to be returned for Bachelor and Master Students. There will be recycle options available at Ryan Field and at the Convocations if students wish to recycle their regalia.

Regalia Return for Doctoral Students

Regalia return information will be available once student picks up their cap and gown.
