Special Considerations for Graduate Students
The main NCA publishing industry page provides a helpful introduction to careers in publishing for all students, so make sure to read that, too. Here are some additional considerations for graduate students considering a career in publishing.
Publishing offers many types of opportunities for graduate students with skills in writing, editing, marketing, production, and design. While academic presses sometimes seek PhDs with subject-matter knowledge in particular fields, many positions in this field value experience over credentials, so seek opportunities to gain relevant experience through paid or unpaid work.
Networking is an important part of the hiring process in publishing. Talk to alumni working in the field. Find them via our.northestern.edu and through the Northwestern University Alumni group on LinkedIn.
