Special Considerations for Graduate Students
The main NCA nonprofits industry page provides a helpful introduction to careers in nonprofits for all students, so make sure to read that, too. Here are some additional considerations for graduate students considering a career in nonprofits.
There are many opportunities for graduate students in nonprofits, but many nonprofits will value skills and experiences over credentials. The best way to gain relevant skills and experience is to work with a student group or to get involved with nonprofit work while you are still at Northwestern. If no formal internship opportunities are available, it may be possible to volunteer. Also see the main NCA nonprofit page for advice about how to market yourself for a career in nonprofits.
Connect with alumni working in nonprofits and learn about their career paths through informational interviews. You can find alumni via our.northestern.edu and through the Northwestern University Alumni group on LinkedIn.
