Overview of Postdoctoral Fellowship

Chicago CAPS offers a Postdoctoral Fellowship that is designed for graduates of counseling or clinical psychology doctoral programs who are seeking licensure.

Chicago CAPS is part of Northwestern’s Counseling & Psychological Services and works with students attending programs on the university’s Chicago Campus. This includes graduate and professional students from Feinberg School of Medicine, Pritzker School of Law, The Graduate School, and Medill School of Journalism among other programs. As such, postdoctoral fellows at Chicago CAPS gain expertise in working with graduate and professional students with a wide range of presenting concerns and they have gone on to use this experience in university counseling careers and private practice, among other pursuits in psychology. Chicago CAPS has a multidisciplinary staff and offers the benefit of working with a smaller, tight-knit team on a day-to-day basis while also being a part of a larger university counseling center.

The primary focus of the Postdoctoral Fellowship is providing direct clinical services to students. At least 70% of the fellow’s time will be spent delivering clinical services including initial phone consultations, intakes (extended care plan meetings), short-term individual therapy, group therapy, crisis work, after-hours coverage, and case management. The remainder of the time will be a combination of outreach activities (e.g., Let’s Talk), consultation, administrative tasks, professional development, and receiving supervision.

The postdoctoral fellow will receive 2 hours of weekly supervision. The supervision is divided between 2 staff members who are licensed psychologists. In addition, fellows will have the opportunity for consultation at weekly staff meetings. Our staff is committed to the professional development and growth of the postdoctoral fellow. The fellowship is designed as a capstone to the postdoc’s clinical training, and is designed to help them accrue the required hours for licensure and to be prepared to enter the field and assume their professional responsibilities moving forward.
