Alex Kotlowitz is a celebrated journalist and author. His books include Never a City So Real (2004), The Other Side of the River (1998) and There Are No Children Here (1991), which was named as one of the 150 most important books of the 20th century by the New York Public Library. A former staff writer at The Wall Street Journal, his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, as well as on This American Life and PBS. He's also the author (with Amy Dorn) of the play An Unobstructed View, which premiered in Chicago in June of 2005. His honors include a George Foster Peabody Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the George Polk Award. Since 2001, he has served as Northwestern's Writer-in-Residence during the winter quarter.
