The Art of Fiction

Ward Just

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a course for those who believe in the power and necessity of imagination, who believe they can-or more to the point, must-create their own facts in order to tell the truth. This presupposes a high degree of dissatisfaction with the world as the writer finds it. The focus of the course will be on students' own work, which will consist of one long story (7,000 words) or two short ones. The emphasis will be on practice as opposed to theory, and while a willingness to participate in class discussions is preferred, it is not absolutely necessary. What is necessary is the work itself."
