Our Mission

The Northwestern University Police Department, as a functional unit of the Department of Safety & Security, serves a vibrant and diverse university community of about 31,000 faculty, staff and students, as well as thousands of daily visitors on the Evanston and Chicago campuses — around the clock, every day of the year. We are committed to a collaborative and transparent approach to campus safety that engenders the highest level of respectful engagement and equitable services to all, to foster an environment where learning, working and research can continue to thrive at Northwestern.

Crime Prevention

University Police patrols campuses and designated jurisdictional areas near our campuses. Officers may patrol on foot, in squad cars or on mountain bikes or T3 mobile units and make routine security checks of campus buildings.

Respond to Calls for Service

Respond to calls for assistance routed from the department's Communications Center, staffed by professional dispatchers.

Investigate Incidents

Investigate reported criminal incidents and conduct follow-up investigations.

Maintain Relationships with Law Enforcement Partners

Maintain working relationships with the Evanston and Chicago Police Departments, the Illinois State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including joint investigation for major incidents.
