The Northwestern University Evanston and Chicago campuses are unique communities that present special circumstances and challenges.

As with other law enforcement agencies, University Police personnel have a police role that's traditional, but are also trained to respond to situations and issues inherent to the campus environment.

University Police Officers have the same full law enforcement powers and responsibilities under State law as municipal police officers and county sheriffs. All Officers must complete a State approved police academy, a comprehensive University Police field training program and firearms training.

University Police maintain close working relationships with the Evanston and Chicago Police Departments and have jurisdiction on city streets near each campus.
