AppleTalk routing ceases

Information Technology has ceased routing AppleTalk over the campus backbone.

Anyone using a Macintosh computer on campus is affected by this change. Most dial-up users will not be affected.

The most visible change is that the AppleTalk zones now available in the Chooser will disappear. Desktop computers, servers, printers and other devices that rely on AppleTalk to communicate between zones will need to switch to TCP/IP-based communication.

All newer Macintosh computers and Mac-compatible hardware are generally network-ready and should only require minor configuration to access those services via the TCP/IP

protocol. Most older computers and printers can be converted for use in a TCP/IP-based environment.

Information Technology recommends that systems be converted or upgraded to use

something other than AppleTalk by March 2001. For more detailed information about the end of AppleTalk routing and what Macintosh users and network administrators need to know about this change, see www.tss.northwestern.edu/reference/appletalk/.
