The Erickson-Koch Memorial Garden, formerly the
Deering Library south garden, was originally created under the
watch of Theodore Wesley Koch, University Librarian from 1919
to 1941. Koch made sure the garden was as elegant as the library
itself and continued to improve it until his death in 1941.
Forty years later, Rolf Erickson, then head of Circulation Services,
conceived a plan with R. Russell Maylone, curator of special
collections, and Patrick Quin, University archivist, to restore
the garden, which had fallen into neglect. Last year the garden
was renamed and dedicated in honor of both Erickson and Koch.
