Irelands Prime Minister Bertie Ahern visited Northwestern
in March to deliver the third annual T.W. Heyck Lecture.
During his talk, Ahern said he supports the provision
of the Good Friday agreement that the citizens of Northern
Ireland must approve a shift of ties from Britain to Ireland.
However, he cautioned the timing of such a poll should
be considered carefully so as to not disrupt the positive
momentum of good and fair government being
fostered by the Good Friday agreement.
University officials, community members and the general
public filled the Owen L. Coon Forum at Leverone Hall
to hear the Prime Ministers talk.
The Heyck Lecture Series and Scholarly Development Fund
was initiated in December 1999. It supports the British/Irish
Historian Guest Lecture Series, as well as a research
grant project, which allows history department graduate
students to travel to Britain or Ireland to conduct research
in their areas of interest. (Photo by Andrew Campbell)
