Eight faculty recognized as among most cited

Eight Northwestern faculty members have been recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information for being among the most cited researchers worldwide.

They have been recognized as leading scholars in their fields by the institute’s Web-based resource that lists individuals, departments and laboratories that have made fundamental contributions to the development of science and technology in recent decades.

The faculty members are:

• Zdenek P. Bazant, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering
• Ted B. Belytschko, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Mechanical Engineering and chair of mechanical engineering
• Arthur J. Freeman, Morrison Professor of Physics and Astronomy
• Wing K. Liu, professor of mechanical and civil engineering
• Tobin J. Marks, Morrison Professor of Chemistry
• Marek-Marsel Mesulam, director of the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center and Ruth and Evelyn Dunbar Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
• Richard J. Miller, professor of pharmacology and biological chemistry
• John A. Pople, Board of Trustees Chair of Chemistry

The database can be accessed at www.ISIHighly-Cited.com.

Researchers were selected for inclusion in ISIHighly-Cited.com based on the total number of citations received by their scientific articles within a certain category. Citations, or references to a researcher’s scientific paper, are often used as a quantifiable demonstration of a scientist’s impact or influence.

The Institute for Scientific Information identified and evaluated 19 million articles or source records to identify the most highly cited researchers.

Those selected for ISIhighly-Cited.com comprise less than one-half of 1 percent of the almost 5 million researchers in the ISI database, from 1981-99.
