Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man
Walking, made a visit last month to the Medill School
of Journalism to share her thoughts on the death penalty. The
main question that we have to ask ourselves, she said,
is what kind of society do we want to be and what does
it say about us when we imitate the killers as a means of revenge?
While writing letters to death row inmates in the 1980s, Prejean
met Patrick Sonnier, who was convicted and sentenced to die
in the electric chair. She served as witness to Sonniers
execution and was so moved by the experience that she decided
to share her story. Prejean spoke to a capacity crowd at the
McCormick Tribune Forum as part of the ongoing Crain Lecture
series.
