| The Never-Ending
Debate Continues: Should Al Gore Be President?
EVANSTON,
Ill. --- Still smoldering over the results of the 2000 Presidential
election? Sick and tired of the sore losers who can't give the election
of George Bush a rest? Come to the Great Debate -- Resolved: Al
Gore should be President -- at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Northwestern
University.
The second
in the Great Debate Series sponsored by the Office of the Provost
and Northwestern's nationally renowned Debate Society, the debate
will take place in the auditorium of Fisk Hall, 1845 Sheridan Road,
Evanston campus.
With the
help of two undergraduates, Northwestern professors Susan Herbst
and James Speta will try to resolve, once and for all, whether Al
Gore should be president. Herbst, professor of political science
and communication studies, and her team will defend the negative.
Northwestern School of Law Assistant Professor Speta's team will
defend the affirmative.
Herbst,
a national debate champion in high school, is a scholar of American
politics, public opinion and mass media. As a University of Michigan
undergraduate, Speta qualified three years in a row for the elimination
rounds of the National Debate Tournament. He teaches and studies
communication law.
The debate
will revolve around the impact of media coverage of the 2000 Presidential
election. Even if it doesn't bury the issue forever, the arguments
should be compelling. For information, call Scott Deatherage at
