Medill Dean Honored for Work on Diversity

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Loren Ghiglione, dean of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, has been named a 2005 champion for the cause of diversity in the news media by the National Association of Minority Media Executives (NAMME).

Ghiglione will receive the Lawrence Young Breakthrough Award at the organization’s “Celebration of Diversity” awards ceremony on April 14. According to NAMME, the award “is given to an individual who transforms the paradigm of diversity in the media.”

Ghiglione has worked on diversity issues throughout his career. He founded the Task Force on Minorities in the Newspaper Business, organized minority job fairs nationwide as chair of the Minorities Committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE), championed diversity as ASNE president, and served on the Diversity Committee of the Newspaper Association of America.

A leader in promoting diversity in journalism education, Ghiglione chairs the Diversity Committee of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.  He served on the boards of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education and Howard University’s Center for the Study of Race and the Media.

Ghiglione has received other awards recognizing his commitment to diversity issues, including the Ida B. Wells Award from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the National Conference of Editorial Writers, and the National Broadcast Editorial Association. He received a Special Recognition Award from the Asian American Journalists Association and President’s Award from NABJ.

Ghiglione will accept his award with five other 2005 NAMME award winners, including photojournalist Gordon Parks and CNN correspondent Maria Hinojosa.
