Flutist Kujala to Give Birthday Concert
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University School of Music flute professor and retired Chicago Symphony Orchestra flutist Walfrid Kujala will celebrate his 80th birthday with faculty colleagues and special guests at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus.
The “Walfrid Kujala: Four Score and Seven Players” concert will feature American works, including the premiere of “Wally’s Caprice” for solo flute, a composition written especially for Kujala by M. William Karlins.
Among the artists that will help Kujala to celebrate will be pianist Martin Amlin, flutist Sherry Kujala, clarinetist Russell Dagon, bassoonist Robert Barris and guitarist Anne Waller.
The group will perform Martin Amlin’s “Intrada” for two flutes and piano and his Sonata for piccolo and piano. Other works on the program are Robert Beaser’s “Mountain Songs” for flute and guitar, Katherine Hoover’s “Three Sketches” for piccolo and piano, Walfrid Kujala’s arrangement of “The Compleat Audition tAngler” and Walter Piston’s Trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon.
Kujala was a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1954 to 2001. He has been a Northwestern University School of Music faculty member since 1962. A former professor at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., Kujala is a past president of the National Flute Association and the author of “The Flutist’s Progress,” a textbook for flute players. Kujala has long been the consulting editor of many music publications, including “Flute Talk.”
