DANCE

Performance Event, “Warriors and Queens: Radical Stagings of Gender and Sexuality in the Chicago Dance Scene,” 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, Ballroom Theatre, 10 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston campus. This event will feature cutting-edge dance performances by dance artists Atalee Judy of Breakbone DanceCo. and dancer and drag performer Matt Hollis. Judy and Breakbone Dance use video projections, risky movement and hardcore music to reference everything from MTV to S & M, Goth and punk rock and American consumerism. Their unique “bodyslam technique” synthesizes postmodern dance, contact improvisation, martial arts and mosh pit slam dancing. Merging tragedy, comedy, fiction and autobiography, Matt Hollis’ works playfully and soulfully detail his experiences as a gay man. The performance will be followed by a discussion with the artists moderated by dance historian and choreographer Rebecca Rossen. Vital contributors to Chicago’s dance community, Judy and Hollis create visceral and physically demanding works that defy standard ideas about gender and sexuality. The program is co-presented by Northwestern University’s Gender Studies Program, Dance Program and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Admission is free and open to the public. Since seating is limited, seating will be on a first-come, first-seated basis.

Since space is limited, seating will be on a first-come, first-seated basis. General admission is $5. Tickets will be sold at the door on the night of the concert.
