Statement by Northwestern University Provost
Lawrence B. Dumas regarding the
discontinuance of degree programs in organ and church music
I have notified Toni-Marie Montgomery, dean of the Northwestern
University School of Music, that I approve her recommendation that
degree programs in organ and church music be ended. I am taking
this action after having carefully reviewed Dean Montgomery's detailed
and thoughtful recommendation on this matter; comment received
from the University's elected General Faculty Committee; and messages
sent to me by friends of the School, including students, alumni,
and other interested parties.
My decision incorporates the understanding, contained in the
School of Music recommendation, that instruction in organ will
continue to be offered on a non-degree basis and that current students
will be able to complete the degree programs in which they are
enrolled, provided that they make normal progress toward the degree.
I am aware that this decision may disappoint some people within
and beyond the Northwestern University community. Nonetheless,
I am confident that Dean Montgomery has given this matter the most
careful consideration; and I commend her for her leadership in
balancing the needs and priorities of the School. I share Dean
Montgomery's conclusion that this action is an appropriate one. |
