Banjoist Fleck, Bassist Meyer to Perform

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University will present a performance by innovative banjoist Béla Fleck and unique and masterful bassist Edgar Meyer at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St. on Northwestern’s Evanston Campus.

Already known for his achievements in a variety of musical spheres, from bluegrass to pop to world beat, Béla Fleck recently reinvented the image and sound of the banjo on his classical music compact disc “Perpetual Motion,” on which he collaborated with bassist Edgar Meyer. Fleck, a five-time Grammy Award winner, has performed with several ensembles of varying repertoire before forming the Flecktones in 1989.

With a renowned technique and musicianship, Edgar Meyer’s gift for composition and his unique collaborations have earned him recognition outside the borders of the classical music realm. His penchant for imaginative projects has led to partnerships with leading artists from Yo-Yo Ma to Garth Brooks.

The duo’s Pick-Staiger program ranges from jazz, classical and new acoustic to bluegrass, “new- grass” and original compositions.

Single tickets for the Feb. 7 program are $20 for the general public, senior citizens and Northwestern faculty and staff; and $10 for full-time students.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Music Learning Community (MLC) at Northwestern University and its ongoing outreach programs to Chicago-area classrooms and communities.
