Soprano to Perform Rarely Heard Handel Cantata
EVANSTON, Ill. --- As part of a weeklong residency at the Northwestern
University School of Music, guest soprano Julianne Baird will present
a public master class (Feb. 3). She also will be
featured in
the annual Alice Millar Birthday Concert celebration (Feb. 8)
performing the Midwest premiere of Handel’s rarely
heard “Gloria” for Solo Soprano, Strings and Continuo.
Baird will work with School of Music students during the 7:30
p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, master class at Lutkin Hall, 700 University
Place. The Alice Millar Birthday Concert celebration at 5 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 8, will be held at Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan
Road. Both venues are on the Evanston campus.
In addition
to Baird’s Feb. 8 performance of the Handel
work, the birthday program will feature the Alice Millar Chapel
Choir and soloists in Te Deum settings by Marc-Antoine Charpentier
and Antonin Dvorák, conducted by Stephen Alltop. The Millar
Brass Ensemble, conducted by Vincent Cichowicz, will perform Karel
Husa’s Divertimento for Brass.
Baird is one
of today’s best-known performers of early
music. In addition to making more than 100 recordings, she has
appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras
including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland and Philadelphia
orchestras.
Tickets for the Feb. 3 master class are priced from $3.50 to
$6.50. Admission to the Feb. 8 birthday concert is a freewill offering.
