Soprano to Perform Rarely Heard Handel Cantata

EVANSTON, Ill. --- As part of a weeklong residency at the Northwestern University School of Music, guest soprano Julianne Baird will present a public master class (Feb. 3). She also will be

featured in the annual Alice Millar Birthday Concert celebration (Feb. 8) performing the Midwest premiere of Handel’s rarely heard “Gloria” for Solo Soprano, Strings and Continuo.

Baird will work with School of Music students during the 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, master class at Lutkin Hall, 700 University Place. The Alice Millar Birthday Concert celebration at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, will be held at Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road. Both venues are on the Evanston campus.

In addition to Baird’s Feb. 8 performance of the Handel work, the birthday program will feature the Alice Millar Chapel Choir and soloists in Te Deum settings by Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Antonin Dvorák, conducted by Stephen Alltop. The Millar Brass Ensemble, conducted by Vincent Cichowicz, will perform Karel Husa’s Divertimento for Brass.

Baird is one of today’s best-known performers of early music. In addition to making more than 100 recordings, she has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland and Philadelphia orchestras.

Tickets for the Feb. 3 master class are priced from $3.50 to $6.50. Admission to the Feb. 8 birthday concert is a freewill offering. To order master class tickets by phone, call the Pick-Staiger Ticket Office at (847) 467-4000.
