Dolphin Show Presents ‘Gypsy’
EVANSTON, Ill. --- Northwestern University’s 62nd Annual Dolphin
Show will present the musical “Gypsy.”
“Gypsy” will be performed at Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St., Evanston
campus at 8 p.m. Jan. 23; 8 p.m. Jan. 24; 2 p.m. Jan. 25; 8 p.m. Jan. 30; and
2 and 8 p.m. Jan.
31.
With music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, “Gypsy” is
a sexy, funny, upbeat and touching story that chronicles the real-life transformation
of the untalented and shy Louise Hovick into the world’s highest-paid,
highest-profile and most notorious stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee.
“Gypsy” tells the story of the desperately manic woman who made it
all happen -- her mother. The mother of all stage mothers, Mama Rose lies, flirts
and steals to get her young and talented daughter June into show business --
all the while saddled with the burden of finding a place in June’s elaborate
act for her untalented older daughter Louise.
When June elopes to escape her mother’s relentless ambition, Rose becomes
determined to get Louise’s name up in lights -- even if it means forcing
her into stripping and losing the only man she’s ever truly loved.
The 2004 student production features a cast of 20 Northwestern undergraduates
and six child actors from the community, plus a 22-member business staff and
a stage crew of nearly 40.
The Dolphin Show began in 1939 as a swim carnival fundraiser. It has evolved
into the nation’s largest student-produced musical. The annual production
has been a theatrical stepping-stone for such famous alumni as David Schwimmer,
Ann Margret, Tony Randall and Warren Beatty.
